How I made my first children's book.

Life throws challenges our way, and often, those challenges lead to remarkable stories. One such story is embodied in “Tommy Tutu,” a charming children’s book born during a bittersweet time in a mother’s life. This tale is not just about a boy wearing a tutu; it's about bravery and authenticity in a world that sometimes says otherwise.

Tommy Tutu

In 2016, I experienced a whirlwind of emotions. I welcomed a baby named Frankie but was soon confronted with the devastating loss of a mother to lung cancer. The contrast of joy and sorrow was profound. Then, a pivotal moment on a road trip from British Columbia to Alberta changed everything.

"Why didn't you just make a book about a dog?" they said...

On the road, I heard a powerful story on the radio. An eight-year-old boy had chosen to wear his sister's pink tutu to school. Aware of the potential bullying he might face, he still made his choice with confidence. The boy told his mother, "I know people are gonna call me a girl, but I'm still gonna wear it." This bravery struck a chord with me, who was looking for ways to channel her grief and find meaning in her own life as a mother.

Inspired by it all, I set out to create a children's book that would celebrate individuality and resilience.

Crafting the Story

Back home on Vancouver Island, I began to weave the story of Tommy Tutu together. The book encourages children to embrace their uniqueness and stand firm in their identities. Through Tommy's journey, young readers learn the importance of self-acceptance, even when faced with challenges.

The story emphasizes that being different is not just acceptable, but something to be proud of. It invites parents and educators to reflect on how they can create spaces where diversity and self-expression are valued. I intentionally infuse struggles with loss and her mother’s wish for me to make books into each page of Tommy's story.

Themes of Courage and Self-Expression

“Tommy Tutu” teaches children about challenging traditional gender norms and celebrating one's identity. This book opens the doorway for discussions on diversity and acceptance.

By showcasing Tommy’s heartfelt decision to wear the tutu proudly, the narrative emphasizes that bravery doesn't always look the same. Research indicates that children exposed to stories about resilience tend to show increased empathy, understanding, and social skills. For instance, a study revealed that children who read diverse stories performed better in social situations, with 67% of them reporting improved interactions with peers.

This book serves as a platform for children to learn how they can support one another, fostering an environment where kindness and acceptance replace bullying and judgment.

Healing Through Storytelling

For me, writing “Tommy Tutu” was a way to process my grief and create something meaningful for my daughter. Storytelling became a healing journey, allowing me to reflect on pain while building a narrative that teaches empathy and understanding.

The book's lessons extend universally. It resonates with children navigating their own identities and parents striving to instill values of acceptance. By sharing such stories, we can forge strong connections within communities, inspiring others to tell their truths and embrace authenticity.

Spreading the Word

Since its release, “Tommy Tutu” has gained attention for its heartfelt message, even gracing the selves of Chapters/Indigo in the local authors area. I have focused on effectively marketing the book to reach parents and educators. Engaging with schools, libraries, and parenting communities has been essential to help Tommy’s story find its audience.

Social media and community events are powerful tools for spreading the book's message. When people discuss Tommy's journey, it creates an environment where these important themes are explored.

In a world full of societal pressures, stories like “Tommy Tutu” shine brightly, reminding children and parents alike that embracing one's true self is a valuable tool for everybody's living toolbox.

The Impact of Tommy Tutu

The story of “Tommy Tutu” exemplifies how narratives can emerge from deep emotion and transform into sources of hope. It reflects the bravery of a young boy wanting to wear a tutu and the resilience of a mother working to guide her child through life's trials.

Through Tommy’s unique experiences, readers learn vital lessons about acceptance and strength. This book does more than entertain; it celebrates individuality and underscores the importance of self-expression. The power of “Tommy Tutu” lies in its potential to touch lives and inspire families, ensuring that Tommy's journey will be remembered for generations to come.
