How I made my first children's book.

Life throws challenges our way, and often, those challenges lead to remarkable stories. One such story is embodied in “Tommy Tutu,” a charming children’s book born during a bittersweet time in a mother’s life. This tale is not just about a boy wearing a tutu; it's about bravery and authenticity in a world that sometimes says otherwise.

In 2016, I experienced a whirlwind of emotions. I welcomed a baby named Frankie but was soon confronted with the devastating loss of a mother to lung cancer. The contrast of joy and sorrow was profound. Then, a pivotal moment on a road trip from British Columbia to Alberta changed everything.

"Why didn't you just make a book about a dog?" they said...

On the road, I heard a powerful story on the radio. An eight-year-old boy had chosen to wear his sister's pink tutu to school. Aware of the potential bullying he might face, he still made his choice with confidence. The boy told his mother, "I know people are gonna call me a girl, but I'm still gonna wear it." This bravery struck a chord with me, who was looking for ways to channel her grief and find meaning in her own life as a mother.

Inspired by it all, I set out to create a children's book that would celebrate individuality and resilience.

Crafting the Story

Back home on Vancouver Island, I began to weave the story of Tommy Tutu together. The book encourages children to embrace their uniqueness and stand firm in their identities. Through Tommy's journey, young readers learn the importance of self-acceptance, even when faced with challenges.

The story emphasizes that being different is not just acceptable, but something to be proud of. It invites parents and educators to reflect on how they can create spaces where diversity and self-expression are valued. I intentionally infuse struggles with loss and her mother’s wish for me to make books into each page of Tommy's story.
